Image Description and Details: The Gum Nebula Complex also known as Gum 12, is the largest known emission nebula in the sky, spanning about 36 degrees across the southern constellations Vela and Puppis. It is a vast and diffuse nebula. The Gum Nebula is believed to be the remains of a supernova that exploded about 1 million years ago. The shockwave from the explosion is still expanding, and it is thought to be interacting with the surrounding gas and dust, triggering the formation of new stars. This image depicts the great arch or bow, northernmost portion of the expanding bubble of gas interacting with the interstellar medium.
