Unclassified Bubble in Vela

A red and blue glowing bubble-shaped nebula floats in the Vela constellation, set against a dense starfield.

Image Title: OED1

Date image was taken: May 11, 2025

Location: SADR Observatory, Monte Patria, Coquimbo, Chili, Monte Patria (Coquimbo)

Data Acquisition Method: Personal Telescope Setup

Description and Details: Introducing OED-1, a fascinating target captured from SADR Observatory in Chile, in collaboration with Patrick Delay.
This field posed a real challenge in terms of processing:
• Prominent stellar halos in the OIII layer,
• A noticeable flare on the right side of the image,
• And an extremely faint target, making it difficult to bring out fine details without overly boosting the background.
Total exposure time: 28 hours 54 minutes

About the object:
This spectacular bubble-shaped structure, located in the Vela constellation, is an unclassified object recently discovered march 2024
by Aygen Erkaslan and Marcel Drechsler.

Although it lies close to the famous Vela supernova remnant, it appears to be a distinct and independent formation, with no confirmed connection to the Vela SNR.
As per the first analysis, and based on the the H-alpha and [O III] emission morphology, the "bubble" appears to be due to an expanding shock front with a velocity of around 100 km/s.
they are still no clear evidence with regards to the nature of this object.
This unclassified object might be a planetary nebula, but the typical central star is still missing (no evidence of a white dwarf). One explanation might be that the star has already gone and the bubble is the only trace left of it.
