Date image was taken: July 10, 2025
Location: Chile
Data Acquisition Method: Remote Observatory (Commercial)
Description and Details: The image shows the core of the Dragon Egg Nebula (NGC 6164), an emission nebula located about 4,200 light-years away in the southern constellation of Norma. Although its appearance resembles a planetary nebula, NGC 6164 is actually formed by gas ejected from the massive O-type star HD 148937, about 40 times more massive than the Sun.
The bipolar bubbles and intricate filaments are highlighted here in Hubble Palette (SHO), obtained through the collaborative ShaRA Project #13. The data were collected with two remote telescopes in Chile (RC1000 and Newton 500), for a total of nearly 40 hours of integration, and processed following the typical ShaRA Workflow.
