The Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy is a faint satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, located approximately 460,000 light-years away in the constellation Fornax. Despite containing millions of stars, Fornax has a diffuse appearance, with its ancient stellar populations spread across a broad region of the sky.
Fornax is particularly interesting because it hosts five well-known globular clusters, an unusually rich collection for a galaxy of its size. Its stars span a wide range of ages and chemical compositions, revealing a complex history of star formation that continued for billions of years.
One of Fornax's most intriguing mysteries is how its ancient globular clusters have survived without spiralling into the galaxy's centre. Understanding their orbits may provide important clues about the distribution of dark matter and the gravitational processes shaping dwarf galaxies.
