Sh2-114 — The Flying Dragon Nebula

Image Title: Sh2-114 — The Flying Dragon Nebula in HOO-RGB

Date image was taken: August 12, 2026

Location: Nerpio Italian Project Remote Observatory (Spain)
Bortle 3 (SQM 21.70)

Data Acquisition Method: Other

Description and Details: Revealing the delicate, ghostly filaments of Sharpless 114, captured over 36 hours of total integration time from the dark skies of Nerpio.

Deep Sky Facts:

Location and Nature: Floating within the constellation Cygnus, this faint H-II emission nebula displays intricate filamentary structures so fine that they often resemble an ancient supernova remnant rather than a typical star-forming region.

The Red Glow of Hydrogen: Dominant, vivid red filaments trace Hydrogen-Alpha emission. This vibrant color reveals exactly where ionized hydrogen gas is recombining, emitting photons in the red part of the visible spectrum.

The Faint Touch of Oxygen: Subtle, ghostly cyan-blue regions highlight doubly ionized oxygen [O III]. Capturing this extremely faint emission required over 20 hours of dedicated integration to successfully distinguish it from the dense background of the Milky Way. Technical Details (Astro_Nipro):
