IC 405 and IC 410 in Auriga

Wide-field view of IC 405 and IC 410 showing deep red hydrogen emission, blue reflection regions around IC 405, and a bright textured core in IC 410, all set in a dense star field.

Description and Details: IC 405 & IC 410 in HOO

IC 405, also known as the Flaming Star Nebula, is a beautiful emission and reflection nebula located in the constellation Auriga, about 1,500 light-years away. It is illuminated by the hot, runaway star AE Aurigae, whose intense radiation excites the surrounding hydrogen gas, creating the characteristic red and blue glow.

Nearby, IC 410 — the Tadpoles Nebula — is an emission nebula hosting young star clusters. Within it lie two iconic denser structures known as the “tadpoles”, long columns of gas and dust shaped by stellar winds and radiation. These are stellar nurseries where new stars are actively forming.

Together, IC 405 and IC 410 form a stunning and complex region of ionized gas, dust, and ongoing star birth, making it a spectacular target in narrowband imaging.

It took me one night to image this nebula complex with a duoband filter.
