NGC 5078 & NGC 5101

Image Title: NGC 5078 & NGC 5101

Copyright: Daniel Stern

Date image was taken: March 28, 2024

Location: Rio Hurtado, Chile

Image Description and Details: There are two bright galaxies in this field, NGC 5101(upper left) and NGC 5078 (lower right). Both are similar in size to our own Milky Way and are about 90 million light years away. To put that into perspective, the light captured in this image left its source 25 million years before dinosaurs went extinct. Many galaxies are peppered throughout the picture and of note is NGC 5078’s (lower right) interaction with its neighbor just below it. Some are even visible right through the face-on disk of NGC 5101.
