Description and Details: Located around 9,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius, the 300,000-year-old Trifid Nebula is one of the youngest emission nebulae known. The Trifid illustrates three different types of astronomical nebula: red emission nebulae dominated by the light of hydrogen atoms, blue reflection nebulae produced by dust reflecting starlight, and dark nebulae where thick clouds of dust appear and separate the reddish emission region into three parts, giving the Trifid its name.
